Brenda Perryman /PR Director- Bio


Brenda comes back to WHPR with a wealth of experience. As Public Relations Director, Brenda’s job is to represent the station to the public. Her goal is to heighten the profile of WHPR by publicizing its magnitude and variety of the programming. She will establish and maintain cooperative relationships with representatives of community, corporate entities and the entertainment industry. Brenda recognizes that WHPR should be considered “DESTINATION TELEVISION AND RADIO” for anyone who wants to reach out to the metro Detroit and Highland Park area.

A former educator, Brenda received her Bachelor and Masters degrees in Speech, Dramatic Arts and Education from Eastern Michigan University. During her undergraduate studies, she became a member of a sorority (Alpha Kappa Alpha), where she learned more about commitment, dedication, and purpose.

Brenda has enjoyed a successful writing and speaking career. She is the author of three books of poetry, Mood Swings and Magic Carpet Rides, Moods for You and Tender Ravings. She has performed her works nationally. For the past several years she has been a columnist for a suburban Detroit newspaper (The Southfield Eccentric). Brenda’s upcoming book is titled, She Who Limps Is Still Walking.

Brenda has been well recognized locally and nationally. She has received several Spirit of Detroit Awards, recognition as the local NAACP’s Most Outstanding Member. She was Chrysler

Corporation’s featured poet for the company’s Spirit in the Words program, which received The President’s Citation by Poets and Writers Magazine at a ceremony in New York City. In 2000, Brenda began her role as Spirit Expert and Inspirationalist for Procter & Gamble’s nation-wide Total You Tour that reached thousands of young women on college campuses and in urban convention centers.

In 2002 Brenda began a relationship with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. At that time, Diana Jones, then Vice-President of Community Affairs, asked her if she could design a program that would educate students about the dangers of dating violence. Perryman then wrote and designed Into The Light. In the fall of 2002 her advanced Acting class at Southfield High School rehearsed and began touring Into The Light (Combating Teen Dating Violence). The program incorporated spoken word poetry, dramatic vignettes and narration that were student delivered. During its four years of touring, Into The Light reached thousands of students in the metropolitan Detroit area. It encouraged young people to think before they act violently in dating situations.
The Into the Light program was filmed and put on DVD and was distributed to every high school in the state of Michigan. Brenda also wrote the toolkit to help teachers in order to help schools educate their students about dating violence.

Brenda has a background in Theatre education and has directed well over 100 theatrical productions. This factor has also puts her in demand as a casting director and acting coach. Brenda has also appeared in several films. She still finds time to write and direct her own productions.

Brenda hosts also hosts a program on WHPR TV. Talk To Me With Brenda Perryman is a community affairs show. She also has a variety of guests from many walks of life. She believes in stirring the pot of conversation too. On her radio program Brenda’s Rhythms, Rhymes and Reasons she performs poetry from her books and meshes their themes with music.

Brenda continues to speak nationally on a variety of topics. From the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York to the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, she has wowed audiences with her when wit and wisdom.
